Regular, moderate consumption of beverage alcohol can be part of a healthy lifestyle for most, but not all, adults. In the Dietary Guidelines for Healthy Americans, the U.S. Government defines moderate consumption as no more than two drinks per day for men, or one drink per day for women. There are, however, some adults who should not drink at all. Only you know your family's medical history. You may know from your own experience that you find it difficult to drink only in moderation. And all of us have days or times when we shouldn't drink — when we are excessively tired or hungry or dehydrated, or stressed, or taking certain medications, or engaging in demanding activities.
